Our lawyers help retailers to integrate technology into everything they do while minimising risk and remaining compliant with the ever-changing legal and regulatory requirements.
With retailers continuing to integrate technology into everything they do — both to drive new operational efficiencies and adapt to constantly changing consumer behaviours — it’s vital to have access to a trusted legal team that can help you to navigate the contractual and regulatory frameworks for your digital platforms. Any business that’s embracing technology and rapidly innovating can’t do so without introducing some level of risk. Ensuring that your customers, people and brand are protected is paramount to effective digital transformation.
As a full-service law firm with leading retail and technology sector teams, we operate at the cutting-edge of innovation and on the frontlines of the issues that matter most — whether you’re a household name retailer, eCommerce business, disruptive tech start-up or social media seller.
We’re fortunate enough to work with some of the biggest innovators in retail tech, including Very, Booking.com, Groupon, Morrisons, Parcel2Go, Adalyser and Yodel as well as online pharmacies such as Chemist4U.
As part of an extensive tech network across the North and wider England and Wales, we have strong connections with a range of highly innovative companies and investors. Our True North network also contains hundreds of purpose-led organisations committed to supporting the future of the North and driving economic prosperity across the UK through collaboration and knowledge sharing.
We can advise you of the commercial and regulatory requirements that apply to your business to help ensure compliance. We also provide leading guidance around AI regulations, the sale of standalone and bundled insurance products, consumer rights and advertising law, data analytics (particularly in the context of GDPR), social media and social eCommerce, sustainability, payment solutions, fraud and FinTech.

Our RetailTech team is spearheaded by Colin Bell, a Partner who leads our intellectual property and technology teams. Colin represents many clients across the retail sector, advising on a wealth of IP and commercial matters including eCommerce, franchising and licensing, sponsorships, influencers and content creators, advertising and consumer rights, manufacturing, distribution, agency and reseller agreements as well as the protection, exploitation and enforcement of all IP (trade marks, registered designs, copyright and patents).
Our Head of Retail Helena Davies leads a 50-strong group of specialists who advise many retail brands and is keen to address the future of retail and leisure in its many forms. With a genuine passion for sustainability and better business, Helena focuses on the social impact of retail brands and spaces, alongside their commercial needs. Our sector group incorporates a number of special focuses, including leisure and hospitality, food and drink, beauty and fashion and motor trade.
Sara Ludlam brings a wealth of experience in both retail and technology, having held in-house and private practice roles with a focus on eCommerce and other retail matters. Sara also deals with both contractual and litigious IP issues, advising across all areas of IP including trade mark and design right registrations as well as commercial agreements, GDPR compliance, licensing, transactions and dispute management.
