Pensions

Our pensions lawyers help clients to manage pension risk and leverage opportunities.

Our award-winning pensions team advises decision-makers and stakeholders on all aspects of pensions law across the private, public and third sectors.

Having worked in some of the largest pensions law teams of global, national and boutique law firms and with over 70 years of collective experience to draw on, our experts are trusted to deliver practical, focused and actionable legal advice that minimises risk while driving better outcomes.

Pensions law can be a source of material risk (including reputationally) for trustees, employers, stakeholders and the third parties who do business with them. It's also increasingly politicised and pervasive, impacting decision-making. Whether the issues that you're experiencing are critical and high-stakes or more day-to-day, getting clear, actionable legal advice from trusted pension specialists is key.

We advise on business-as-usual matters including governance and compliance, scheme funding, investment issues and the use of contingent assets. We also support on complex project work including scheme closures and mergers, benefit redesigns, liability management exercises and risk transfer (‘buy-in’ and ‘buyout’).

Organisations may harbour pension risks that are crystallised or transferred as a result of corporate activity. Our team has market-leading experience in advising on the pension aspects of corporate activity including M&A, group reorganisations and restructuring (including on insolvency). We’re experts in identifying, evaluating and mitigating pension risk for our clients.

We can also help when things go wrong. We're experts in the resolution of pension disputes, including those brought before the Pensions Ombudsman and dealing with regulatory interventions, such as enforcement actions brought by the Pensions Regulator. We can call on our experienced pensions litigation colleagues where a dispute justifies litigation — for example, where a dispute concerns a claim of professional negligence.

Our public sector work includes advising contractors on their rights and obligations under public sector pension schemes, including those arising on central and local government outsourcing. We advise on issues arising from participation in non-associated multi-employer schemes (NAMES), including the Social Housing Pension Scheme (SHPS).

Our work spans a broad range of sectors, including healthcare, technology, real estate, retail, sport, motoring, banking, education, manufacturing, the public sector and financial services.

Our clients range from corporates, pension trustees, local authorities and academy trusts to housing associations, charities, trade unions, SSAS and SIPP operators, private individuals and other law firms. We act for the sponsoring employers, trustees and providers of pension schemes as well as not-for-profit organisations, family-run businesses, SMEs and global corporations.
