Brabners Protect — Making the third-party 'off the shelf' health and safety policies fit for purpose at major college

Thursday 15 February 2024

Following a number of concerns raised by the Board of Directors and the appointment of a new CEO, a large North-West-based independent college instructed our Brabners Protect team to undertake an initial status review.

This was designed to establish whether its third-party-supplied health and safety policy, procedures and support approach were fit for purpose.

Inadequate health and safety advice

Following a forensic review of the supplied health and safety policies and procedures, it became clear that large swathes of the undertaking hadn’t been considered. Consequently, no information existed to manage important and high-risk areas of the college. The approach at senior management level was also lacking as a result of inadequate and poor advice.

Following the review, our instructions were expanded to develop a bespoke approach to safety leadership and assist in developing an overarching health and safety strategy

Developing a positive safety culture

Our consultants and legal advisers were on-hand to provide safety coaching to the college’s management team so that it could develop its own health and safety policy and procedures — and in turn become self-sufficient.

To ensure a successful implementation, we also developed an internal auditing approach (independent of internal processes) to give the Board of Directors comfort that risk was being managed in-line with regulatory expectations and best practice.

This all helped to meet the college’s strategic aim of developing a positive safety culture.
