Ian Alderson

Ian is a Partner and leads our Housing and Regeneration sector.  

In his role as sector leader he sets our Housing and Regeneration sector strategy, leads on solutions to the issues faced by our clients and develops our sector talent pool.

Ian is an experienced lawyer who takes a pragmatic approach enabling clients to resolve problems quickly and effectively.

He handles contentious issues such as housing management, property and commercial disputes, landlord and tenant litigation (particularly residential), human rights cases and judicial review. He acts for clients in both the housing and regeneration and private sectors.

He prepares tenancy agreements and other documents and is an advocate of plain English in legal documents. He advises registered providers on governance issues and complaint handling.

Ian has successfully litigated high profile cases in the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal including Riverside Housing Association v White (2007) and Briscoe v Lubrizol Limited (2002) and frequently appears as an advocate in courts and tribunals.

He is also a qualified mediator and regularly represents clients on a variety of alternative dispute resolution.

He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Housing and Property Litigation Association and is classed as a ‘Recommended Lawyer’ and a ‘Leading Individual’ by The Legal 500 and Chambers. He is described as “expert and incisive” by the 2019 edition of The Legal 500.

Ian’s clients include The Riverside Group, Your Housing, Torus, South Liverpool Homes, Regenda, Community Housing Associations North West members and various housing co-operatives.

Ian was Head of Litigation at Bremners, a specialist housing and regeneration practice which we merged with in 2009.
