Redundancies in the Charity Sector

Sunday 9 August 2020

The National Trust has announced plans to make up to 1,200 staff redundant in a bid to save costs.

They are considering this as a necessary step having exhausted all other options, at a time when the charity expects to lose around £200 million this year.

The announcement came on 29 July as they began the collective consultation period with the trade union Prospect. The Trust’s Director General commented that the charity must be “leaner and more flexible, and reduce its operating and project costs” as the Trust draws up a restart strategy from March next year.

The National Trust is not alone is having to consider such difficult decisions and look to make longer term plans. As more employers, including charities who have seen falling levels of donations during the pandemic, are gearing up to life post-lockdown many are or will soon be in a similar position.

The Brabners Charity and Social Enterprise team has been assisting clients on a range of matters arising out of the pandemic whilst our Employment team is experienced at advising on employment law matters affecting charities, including redundancies. Please do get in touch with a member of either team if you require advice.
