COVID-19 and the impact on social housing

Wednesday 1 July 2020

We are continuing to provide support to our Registered Provider clients and Developer clients throughout COVID-19 and keep them informed about the latest social housing updates.

It is pleasing to see that construction work on development sites has picked back up and projects for development schemes are continuing. However, the economy after the pandemic will no doubt have long lasting effects on our social and political landscape given the hit on the construction sector and developments temporarily freezing. Social housing is in need of a greater supply of funding than ever before, with a strong demand for social housing that is secure, good quality and affordable so people do not build up rent arrears. We anticipate that as well as seeing an increase in demand for social rented housing, we may see a return to focus on home ownership including a possible increase in demand for properties with gardens / outdoor space which has become an important part of quality of life during lockdown. Investment in development and regeneration is crucial and a positive way to support recovery in the social housing sector to drive us out of a potential recession that we may be headed into.

If you require assistance with any sales, acquisitions, development agreements, securitisation work or anything else, please do not hesitate to get in touch with a member of our Housing and Regeneration team.
