Ban on Evictions Extended

Friday 8 January 2021

The ban on evictions has been extended past it's previous expiry date.

Housing Minister Robert Jenrick has this afternoon announced that the ban on evictions (referred to in our previous blog here) will be extended past its original expiry date of 11 January 2021 and will apply until 21 February 2021.

The Public Health (Coronavirus) (Protection from Eviction and Taking Control of Goods) (England) Regulations 2020 have as yet not been updated or at least the updated version has not yet been published and so we will provide an update as soon as possible once we have more details. It is not anticipated that the exceptions to the ban will change but if they do, we will cover the impact for social landlords in our next blog.

Mr Jenrick also confirmed that there will be a £10 million fund for local authorities (the extent to which this extends to other registered providers of social housing remains unclear) to "redouble their efforts" when it comes to assisting and accommodating homeless persons as part of the Government’s 'Everyone In' initiative.

Watch this space for a further update as soon as the updated regulations on this subject are published. In the meantime, for more information or advice on any specific cases or issues please feel free to contact Zoe Glacken.
