Employment matters

Charities of all sizes employ staff. Very small charities might simply employ a part time administrator but much larger organisations will typically have a staffing structure similar to what you might see in a commercial company. Charity chief executives and managers are very common and many charities that depend on public donations will employ fundraising managers and staff.

As well as paid staff, charities also very regularly make use of a pool of volunteers who dedicate their time and energy free of charge to assist in a charity’s administration and operation.

As is the case with a commercial company, charities require employment contracts, staff handbooks and a range of policies designed to minimise the risk of encountering difficulties that might result in the trustees being landed with a claim in the Employment Tribunal.

In addition to this, an increasing number of charities are adopting volunteering policies in order to protect themselves against any suggestion by a volunteer that they are in fact an employee with the full range of associated employment rights.

We have a team of solicitors specialising in Employment law who very frequently advise charities upon their existing contracts and policies, as well as assisting with any disciplinary matters, claims and other issues that arise.

A full description of the services provided by our Employment team appear on our Employment pages along with contact details for our Employment solicitors.
