Solicitor Helen Marriott first family law arbitrator for Liverpool

Solicitor Helen Marriott first family law arbitrator for Liverpool

Thursday 14th February 2013

Brabners Chaffe Street’s divorce and family law expert Helen Marriott is the first solicitor to qualify as a family law arbitrator in the Liverpool legal sector.

Helen, a Partner and head of the family law team at Brabners Chaffe Street, is one of only approximately 150 lawyers in England and Wales to have qualified as a family law arbitrator under the new scheme introduced last year.  To qualify Helen was required to undertake rigorous training and assessment and can now become a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration.

Arbitration is a form of alternative dispute resolution which has been used extensively to resolve commercial disputes but has only recently been applied to family law.  Under the family law arbitration scheme, an arbitrator is appointed to resolve financial family law disputes by providing legally binding outcomes, known as ‘awards’, which offer an alternative to the court system.  The scheme covers financial and property disputes including divorce settlements, financial provision for children, property and inheritance issues.

Speaking about her qualification, Helen Marriott said: “I am thrilled to have gained this qualification. I can see arbitration being a really useful form of alternative dispute resolution where parties want a speedier and confidential resolution to their family issue. Proceedings can be conducted at the pace the parties chose, unlike the court process which can often be very slow. I can see that arbitration will appeal to high profile individuals who want to keep their case entirely confidential and away from the court arena.”

Mark Brandwood, Managing Partner of Brabners Chaffe Street comments: “Helen’s qualification as a trained family law arbitrator is a great addition to Brabners Chaffe Street’s family law services. I would like to congratulate her on her achievement.”

Brabners Chaffe Street will be holding a series of masterclasses on family law arbitration. The events take place in March at the Liverpool office of Brabners Chaffe Street and will be of interest to lawyers who want to know more about family law arbitration and when to appoint an arbitrator.
