What is the state of play for sport? Brabners Sport Update 2017

Monday 20th November 2017

The ambitions for UK sport are far reaching however for many sports organisations, developments in governance, funding, regulation, reputation and technology all impact upon the state of play. Brabners hosted an expert panel at their half day seminar aiming to help navigate some of the legal and commercial challenges and share insights from experts in the field.

The session was hosted by Brabners' Head of Sports Sector, Lydia Edgar, bringing together insights from the 5 panellists;

Opening the morning, Maurice Watkins CBE, who has operated and advised at senior level in the sports sector for over 40 years, gave his state of the nation address.

Brabners GDPR expert, Matt Brown, presented the General Data Protection Regulations which are due to come in to force in May 2018 and the implications for the acquisition, retention and use of membership data. Followed by media lawyer Phil Steele who provided practical advice and tips on handling the media, including crisis and reputation management as conduct and integrity in sport have been the focus of recent media attention.

Finally we were delighted to welcome triple World Champion gymnast and Olympic medallist Beth Tweddle MBE - Director of Switch the Play, and Ash Cox, Director of Legal at British Swimming who shared their experience and insights in relation to sports duty of care in light of Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompsons Independent Review in April 2017 with a particular focus on athlete transition and also in relation to governance and the impact of the Code for Sports Governance.

We would like to thank those who were able to join us on Friday. If you would like to find out more about any of the topics covered, please contact Lydia Edgar or a member of the sports team
