Code for Sport Governance

Code for Sport Governance

Friday 4th November 2016

Brabners welcomes the long-awaited Code for Sport Governance (published 31 October) which seeks  to drive excellence in the way in which sports organisations are governed.   Lydia Edgar, Head of Brabners Sport Sector Team, comments: “The Code requires organisations to meet new standards of governance in return for their public funding from Sport England and UK Sport. The requirements will force a number of organisations to  review and change their practices and operating strategies quite significantly. In essence, it means that there will be far greater accountability and transparency across the sport sector and greater protection for the investment that is made in each sport.”

Lydia explains that sports organisations will now need to demonstrate:

  • Clear and appropriate constitutional arrangements and effective Board leadership
  • The recruitment of a Board and workforce with appropriate skills independence and diversity
  • Effective communication with stakeholders with an emphasis on transparency regarding structure strategy and financial position
  • High standards of conduct and integrity.

Brabners sport sector team will be offering a package of measures to  support organisations in their drive to meet the mandatory requirements that apply to them. Details will follow soon.

The Code can be found here.
